It seems like a perfect free hosting alternative for small to medium sized sites, except having the sendmail option. It provides a good amount of disk space and bandwidth, 10 mysql databases, the ability to host your own domain and best of all without any annoying ads. The benchmark results are not so good, but I didn’t feel any slowness while using their services.

The features of ZENDUrl seems like enough for a personal or basic site, but advertising the features are not enough, they also have to fullfill that they promise. I opened an account to try the control panel and make the benchmarks, but I can’t create a subdomain nor a domain using the control panel, I got a message saying that sections is closed temporarly. I skipped this step, and tried to use the file manager to upload some files but it is also not possible, I encountered many strange php error messages on their control panel page. Lastly I decided to use the ftp service to upload the files, but it is also a difficult process. Because the server is limited to 50 concurent ftp connections, I had try to connect to ftp many times. After sending the files to the server, I opened the benchmark script that I uploaded the site but I had to try it several times too. The server gives strange php errors randomly. After all, I can say that my experience is poor at ZendURL, but it may be a temporary problem. Please leave your comments if you use their services.

Awardspace is the first company I know that provides no ads domain hosting. I used their services two years ago, but leave them because of the high downtime percentage and server slowness. Awardspace is really a popular service, therefore crowded servers and especially bad neighbours affect your sites performance. I don’t know if they solved the downtime problem now, but the benchmark results are still above average. If you upgrade your service in the future, they move your pages to another cluster, and the free users won’t affect your sites performance. If you choose awardspace you will have a detailed cpanel including a crontab feature and a secure service, even the free package does not have superior features.

100 WebSpace’s free package might be good solution for a small webpage, or blog, but not more. It adds several textlinks and a large banner on top of your page. By paying $0.99 monthly you can remove those annoying advertisement from the top of your pages.
If you need a upgrade in the future, the cheapest package is $2.95 monthly which does not have a big difference compared to free plan. (This page explains how to remove the ads by adding 2-3 lines of code, apply it on your own risk, if they notice they may suspend your account.)

In spite of this negativities, the service is performing really well for a free host. Additionaly with the help of the free script installer software called Elefante you can install a wide variety of well known software packages (blogs, content managment systems, photo galleries etc.) within seconds.
